The Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) project in Borno has called on livestock farmers to embrace modern production methods to increase productivity and strengthen the state’s livestock value chain.

Makinta Ali, State Coordinator of L-PRES, made the appeal at the project’s fourth stakeholders’ engagement meeting held on Saturday in Maiduguri.

The meeting, themed ‘Strengthening Partnership for Sustainable Livestock Development’, attracted stakeholders from Northern and Central Borno to deliberate on ways to consolidate gains recorded in the sector and promote more efficient livestock production.

Ali said L-PRES, in collaboration with the Borno State Government, was implementing measures to promote sustainable livestock production through improved infrastructure and the adoption of modern technologies.

He said the project was also creating more commercial opportunities for livestock owners, traders and pastoralists across the state.

According to him, the project covers various components of livestock development, including dairy and meat production, as well as sheep and goat farming.

Ali said L-PRES had adopted a community-oriented strategy aimed at promoting sustainable development and improving the livelihoods of people involved in livestock production.

He explained that the project’s interventions in 2025 focused mainly on crop and animal production, while the 2026 work plan would place greater emphasis on major infrastructure projects.

“Planned projects include grazing-related infrastructure such as water points for herders, modern abattoirs and veterinary clinics.

“We are also developing organised pasture areas with fenced land, planted grasses and a reliable water supply,” Mr Ali said.

The coordinator said the project was further supporting value addition through the provision of equipment for producing animal feed supplements and encouraging farmers to make better use of crop residues.

He added that efforts were also being made to improve livestock breeds through artificial insemination as a way of raising productivity.

The Deputy Governor of Borno, Umar Kadafur, represented at the meeting by the Commissioner for Livestock Development, Mohammed Lawan, commended L-PRES for its interventions in the state.

Kadafur reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to sustaining initiatives aimed at increasing livestock production and enhancing the sector’s contribution to the Borno economy.
