Nigeria took centre stage at the just-concluded IFAD Regional Implementation Workshop, held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire from 23rd to 25th June 2026, as government officials, project teams, farmer organizations and development partners from across West and Central Africa gathered to compare notes and chart a faster path to rural prosperity.
The event, organised by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), pulled together representatives from IFAD-supported projects across the region to review how far implementation has come, swap hard-won lessons, tackle shared bottlenecks and unearth fresh ideas for getting more impact from every project dollar spent.
Nigeria’s delegation, made up of Federal Government officials and staff from IFAD-supported programmes, didn’t come empty-handed. They brought real stories of what is working on the ground: initiatives boosting food security, driving up agricultural productivity and changing the fortunes of rural women, men and young people across the country.
Throughout the IFAD Regional Implementation Workshop, delegates dug into technical sessions spanning financial management, procurement, monitoring and evaluation, climate resilience, gender equality, youth empowerment, nutrition and knowledge management. Nigeria used the platform to spotlight innovations that have strengthened agricultural value chains, empowered women economically, backed producer organisations and helped rural communities withstand shocks, contributions that fed directly into wider regional conversations on scaling what works.
Nigerian farmer organisation leaders were far from spectators. They took part in panel discussions, contributed actively to the Farmers’ Forum, and helped shape a new regional action plan for farmer organizations that will guide collaboration in the months ahead.
Away from the conference halls, a Knowledge Fair gave IFAD-supported projects from across the region room to display agricultural products, innovations and knowledge materials, creating an informal but valuable space for networking and cross-country learning.
By the close of the workshop, the Nigerian team left confident that the connections made and the knowledge gathered in Abidjan would sharpen the implementation of IFAD-supported programmes back home. More broadly, the gathering reaffirmed IFAD’s push to transform rural livelihoods through partnership, innovation and shared learning, helping countries across West and Central Africa build sturdier agricultural systems, strengthen food security and open up sustainable economic opportunities for rural communities.
